Home Servers

Build new Home Lab Server

The goal of this project is to have a centralized file server, with VM capabilities to help manage my home network.

My old Home Server had run it's course, it still served up files and printers like I had setup, but the old CPU could not run virtual machines, nor could it accept any modern graphics cards and perform Plex home media services.

After upgrading my personal computer, I took the old parts and built a new server with a faster RAID card card, and dual 10GB NIC card for load balancing.

For operating system I finally settled on Windows Server 2019, although I wanted a KVM host this was not possible due to the RAID card I had chosen.  This card was limited because I didn't have enough disks to copy the data from the existing RAID array to a new one, so I had to stay with the same make and family.

After getting Windows 2019 up and running, and reshare the old shares, I now have a server that hosts several Hyper-V guests:

  • Pi-Hole DNS server
  • Cisco Business Dashboard
  • Create Syslog server to digest router and access point logs
  • Additional Test servers
