Home Networking

Upgrade Home network

My goal in this project was to create a robust and capable home network that had the expanse of a low level enterprise environment where I could manage all aspects and be reasonable sure it is as secure as I can make it.

When our wireless home router decided to die in the middle of not being able to go into an office space, I had to find something that would provide a secure, robust, and expandable network solution.

I turned to Cisco networking to see if I could build a home system that was inexpensive, secure and expandable.

I settled on the small business router RV-345P.  This allows me to have multiple VLANs, a VPN, Cisco firewall, and a good number of switched ports for networking my home without the need for multiple network closets.

For wireless access points I am using the Cisco CBW240AC and CBW140AC access points.  These APs allow for multiple WLANs that can be bound to different VLANs.  So my home camera system sits on it's own WLAN and VLAN, my smart IoT devices sit on their own WLAN and VLAN, I have a Guest WLAN that cannot connect to my home network.

Project is not complete, as there are more I want to do

  1. Setup VPN with DNS registered to my dynamic IP
  2. Separate network infrastructure from rest of network
